Advisory – Adherence in Prescribing for Myopia Control Optical Products
12 August 2025
Specialty myopia control optical products have shown good evidence in retarding myopia progression. The Optometrists and Opticians Board (the "Board") has received feedback that some optical retail practitioners did not follow the prescription issued by medical practitioners and optometrists for such products, substituting specialty myopia control optical products with generic ones that do not provide myopia control effects.
2 The Board takes a serious view of this matter as it undermines the public’s trust in the profession and compromises myopia management plans, particularly crucial for young children.
3 If the prescribed optical products are unavailable in the practice or deemed unsuitable for a patient, practitioners must discuss with the original prescriber and the patient to consider appropriate alternatives, or refer the patient to one that carries the prescribed product. Product substitution unknown to the patient constitutes unprofessional conduct, may lead to patient harm and may result in disciplinary action by the Board.
4 The Board highlights these essential principles for maintaining professional standards and public trust:
Prescribe only clinically proven optical products according to the instructions for use
Follow evidence-based practice for efficacy and safety
Maintain proper documentation of prescriptions and any changes
Obtain informed consent from both the original prescriber and patient if any modifications to prescription and prescribed optical product are needed
5 For detailed guidance, please refer to the Board's "Code of Professional Conduct and Professional Practice Guidelines" available on the Board's website.
